About power supplies & barriers

Power supplies & barriers supplies e.g. a transmitter with power, if required also in the Ex-area, and then transmits the galvanically isolated signal. With the optionally available HART® monitoring the status of the transmitter is monitored. Thus even just briefly occurring errors can be easily located.

Portfolio description

Our portfolio of DIN rail power supplies & barriers provides:

  • Power supplies for 2 or 4 wire transmitters
  • Active barrier with power supply for safe separation of 4...20 mA current circuits in one device
  • Power supplies & barriers with bidirectional HART® transmission, communication sockets for HART® and integrated HART® resistor for sensor configuration

Measuring principle / application example

Application example - power supply of a temperature transmitter:
If a 4 to 20 mA HART® head transmitter is installed in a thermometer it has to be supplied with power. An active barrier supplies the head transmitter with power, if required also in the Ex-area, and then transmits the galvanically isolated signal. With the optionally available HART® monitoring the status of the head transmitter is monitored. If an error arises a relay at the active barrier sends an alarm.

Application example for a passive barrier with SPS:
If a sensor in the Ex-area is to be supplied via a SPS the use of a passive barrier is necessary. The passive barrier transmits the supply from the Non-Ex area into the Ex-area and sends back the 4 to 20 mA signal. The passive barrier does not require a power supply as it receives its power from the 4 to 20 mA loop.

Benefits

  • Wide range power supply, flexible power source
  • Power supplies for 2 or 4 wire transmitters
  • Galvanic isolation of 4 to 20 mA current circuits
  • International Ex approvals, Germanischer Lloyd / marine approval available
  • Sensor monitoring with early-warning system
